Root Canal Treatment

If you’ve ever heard someone talk about root canal treatment, they probably didn’t tell you it was a pleasant experience, right? Although root canals have a bad reputation as being painful and scary, today’s root canal therapy is a comfortable, stress-free experience at Roshe Dental.

What most people don’t understand is that the root canal treatment itself will relieve the tooth pain you’re experiencing and save your natural tooth in the process. A root canal removes infected tissue from within your tooth; once the infection is gone, so is your pain!

Signs You Need a Root Canal

Our dental team can diagnose whether your tooth needs a root canal, and sometimes there will be no evident symptoms, but if you are experiencing any of the following, you should contact our dental office:

  • Tooth pain that keeps getting worse
  • Pain when you bite down or touch your tooth
  • Pain that goes into your jaw
  • Extreme sensitivity to hot and cold
  • A bump or pimple on your gums
  • Swollen or tender gums
  • A discolored tooth

Why Are Root Canals Necessary?

Your teeth comprise three layers: the enamel is the hard layer on the outside of your tooth. Beneath the enamel is the dentin and the innermost layer is known as the pulp chamber. Within the pulp chamber are blood vessels, nerves, and tissue.

When the bacteria in your mouth invade the tooth’s pulp, it can cause the abovementioned symptoms. This can happen if you have untreated tooth decay or a cracked tooth. At this point, a root canal is the only way to save your tooth and relieve your pain.

The Root Canal Procedure in Mamaroneck

At Roshe Dental, we use digital images to plan your root canal therapy. Once your treatment plan is complete, your procedure will consist of the following steps:

1. Administer anesthetic – We will use a local anesthetic so you no longer feel any pain.

2. Eliminate infection – Once you’re comfortable, we will use rotary endodontic technology to access the inside of your tooth and remove the infection.

3. Final restoration – The last step of the root canal process is to place a dental crown over your tooth to protect and strengthen it.

Root Canal Aftercare

Now that your root canal is complete, these tips can help you recover quickly from the procedure:

Manage Discomfort

After root canal therapy, your mouth may be tender and sensitive for a few days. Take over-the-counter pain relievers to manage any discomfort, and use a cold compress on your face to help with the swelling.

Eat Soft Foods

We recommend eating soft foods such as yogurt, oatmeal, soup, pudding, and mashed potatoes after your root canal. This will help your mouth heal more quickly.

Maintain Oral Hygiene

Gently brushing and flossing your teeth after your root canal is essential to avoid further infection. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to allow your gums to heal.
